WRFC Youth Rugby
In 2004, Washington RFC
founded the first inner-city youth rugby club in the USA! We started the
club in the summer of 2004 with seven kids participating as the WASHINGTON
WARRIORS in the PRU summer touch league. Since then, members of Washington
RFC have worked tirelessly to promote and grow youth rugby in Washington,
DC.
The youth club now has over 60
members ranging from six to 18 years old. The summer program features three
age groups...Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15. We have also grown to
include an Under-19 program to compete against local high schools. The
Under-19 team has recently moved to Calvin Coolidge High School and will
compete in the MAVRC all high school league this spring. This is the first
rugby program in a DC public school!
The Washington Warriors
provide coaching and mentoring. We actively recruit from all over DC,
including local shelters and group homes. We also reach out to children of
employees of the embassies located in DC. We have featured players whose
parents work at both the Australian and New Zealand Embassies.
The program is FREE for all
the kids. It is funded through donations made by Washington RFC members as
well as grants from charities and corporations. We are always seeking new
sponsors, volunteers and players.
