Washington RFC Repeats as 2006 Atlantic Cup Champions

Cape Henolopen, Lewes, Delaware

August 21, 2006 WRFC beat the Md Exiles in the Finals of the Atlantic Cup to defend it's Championship status from last year. In a hard fought match that began with Md in the lead, WRFC had some exciting play with contributions from everyone on the field. Wingers Alex Dunoye and Curtis both scored tries with Curtis racking up a couple. Fullback Toga opened the scoring cycle for WRFC off a defensive play that netted WRFC the ball. Flyhalf PJ played a dynamic offense that kept the defense on their toes and were unable to stop the 21 year old.

Head Coach Gerry McDonald was pleased with his first tournament win as the new Head Coach of the club he once captained to many victories.

"The boys played some good rugby. They didn't give up. They stuck to the game plan and it paid off." Gerry said afterwards.

WRFC beat Media in the first round, then NOVA and Baltimore Chesapeake to get to the finals.

WRFC Club President, Kevin Tifft was excited to the team get off to a great start to the fall season. "I was overjoyed to get an opportunity to have a run but more excited to see how you pulled together like a CLUB to play inspired rugby."

WRFC's fall season continues this weekend at the US Naval Academy in a scrimmage against the Midshipmen. The season opener will be at the Hyde School in Washington, DC against Pittsburgh.
