10-21-2006 - U.S. SEVENS
TEAM NAMED FOR THAILAND,
SINGAPORE
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – After a week of training at the
Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., the
Men’s National Sevens Team Coach Al Caravelli has
named the U.S. Team that will travel to the first two
international sevens tournaments of the season.
“I picked the 12 players that looked the best based on
the fitness tests and their performances during this
last week,” Caravelli said. “I really feel confident
with this team. They are strong, fast and capable. I
feel I can put my signature on this team. I scouted
them all summer during club competitions, territorial
and NA4, and I’m really excited to let them loose in
the field.”
The first international sevens tournament on the
agenda for the U.S. Team will be in Bangkok, Thailand,
Oct. 28-29, while the second will be in Singapore on
Nov. 4-5. The players selected will travel to both of
these first two tournaments before coming back to the
U.S.
The 12 players that have been chosen make up one the
youngest Eagle sevens squads in history with 23 ½
calculated as the average age of this U.S. Team.
Flyhalf Jone Naqica, of the Denver Barbos, is the most
experienced of the team members. Jason Pye and Jarvis
Albury, of the University of Utah and Arkansas State,
respectively, have played internationally. Of the
newcomers on the team, prop Ron Rosser (Cal Poly SLO)
and wing Jeff Hullinger (BYU) both made their 15s
debuts this past summer. Additional team members
include forwards Marcus Respes (NYAC 7’s & Philly
White Marsh 15’s), Kevin Mongold (Sciotto Valley), and
Andrew McNaughton (Olympic Club); along with backs
Takudzwa Ngwenya (University Dallas Texas), Dallen
Stanford (Oxy Tigers), Andrew (Tui) Osborne
(Washington RFC), and development team member and
former U19 Patrick Komongnan (Washington RFC).
