Washington
Rugby Football Club, based in Washington, DC, is a premier Rugby club and strong player developer
for USA
Rugby. With a Tradition of Excellence since 1963, WRFC is a founding member
of the USA Rugby Super League, promotes youth Rugby and is host of the Cherry
Blossom Tournament.
Currently, we have a high school rugby program that we have helped since its inception. Hyde School, a charter school in the District has a rugby team and several of its member have gone on to play for the USA Eagles. The Hyde School, a charter school based in discipline in education and athletics, saw the value of offering Rugby to its students. Since the school began its charter, WRFC members have coached and support the club to allow the players the opportunity to excel beyond the limits of the District lines. As a result of the support WRFC has offered the Hyde School, the Rugby community has many new stars and the school has gained proud graduates with promising futures.
WRFC
has helped many players develop their game and represent with the USA Eagles. For example,
this past year, 3 WRFC members represented the USA in test matches including
Owen Lentz, PJ Komongnan, and Tui Osbourne. Former fullback Francois Viljoen is
also currently playing for the USA Eagles XV team. Another former Eagle, Prop GJ Sucher,
began his
club rugby career playing for the blue & white of Washington. Dan Lyle, current USA Rugby Director of
Operations and former USA Eagle Captain and Bath RFC Captain, got his start in Rugby at WRFC. Former USA Rugby Sevens Coach, Mike
Coyner, is a former WRFC stalwart.
The
list goes on but these names have a track record that speaks for the development
WRFC has played for the USA Rugby Scene. We are also a founding member of USA
Rugby Super League.
Our club is striving towards greatness not only on the pitch but in the community alike. For example, we have started the first DC Youth Program in the District. This program is giving inner city youth a chance to excel at the fasted growing sport in the US. For WRFC, Rugby is more than 80 minutes on the pitch, it is Lifestyle and attitude that can do greatness in the community and help young people to find a great release to express themselves. Therefore, we help the children find a sport that offers them a chance to earn greatness on the pitch and off.
A particular avenue of
Sportmanship that WRFC has maintained to help other clubs play top level Rugby is
the Cherry Blossom Tournament which is going to be in its
41st
Year this April. While this tournament has been one of the most perennial tournaments
in Men's Club Rugby, it is now one of the Most
Prestigious Venues for College Rugby & High Rugby to showcase their talent.
With this strong Tradition of Excellence, Washington Rugby Football Club is a great organization to play competitive rugby or show your support for USA Rugby.
