WASHINGTON RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

“A Tradition of Excellence”

Dear WRFC Faithful:

We are glad to welcome the new Spring 2007 Rugby Super League Season.

A lot of hard work to develop players within the ckub for this season since competing in the Fall in our MARFU matrix competition. The coaching staff has pulled from our inner ranks to give former WRFC Captain & USA Eagle Head Coach Gerry McDonald the reigns. In addition to the USA Rugby Super League Action, the 41st Annual Cherry Blossom Festival rugby tournament kicks off on April 7 & 8, 2007. Weather permitting as usual, all games will be held on the National Mall at the JFK Hockey fields between the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument. The National Cherry Blossom Festival, Washington D.C., an annual two-week, city-wide event celebrates the 94th Anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the citizens of the United States and Japan.

Rugby has long been a part of the Festival, with the first Cherry Blossom Festival rugby tournament won by the University of Buenos Aires in 1967. An invitational event, the tournament has grown tremendously since its inception, with over forty teams competing in this year’s tournament. The legend of the tournament grew from the dedication of the Washington Rugby Football Club and the Australian Embassy. The Wallaby Trophy, first presented in 1972 by the Australian Ambassador Sir James Plimsoll, is bestowed on the winner of the Men’s Club division, and is traditionally presented by the Ambassador of Australia. And this year’s CBT promises to be oustanding.

In addition to the WRFC Men’s action, the Washington Youth Rugby Program will enjoy its fourth season. Led by Brian “Sweeper” Mihelic, we look forward to more participation from local kids and alumni as well. The sport is the fastest growing high school sport and looking at Hyde Charter High School Rugby it is no wonder why. We look forward to continuing our support of the Hyde Program under the tutelage of WRFC Veteran Tal Bayer. WRFC is proud to keep the memory of our fallen Teammates alive, especially in the name of the Jeff Adams Memorial Scholarship which a current Hyde Graduate, Josh Williamson is the recipient of.  Under the direction of Brian Donnelly, the Jeff Adams Scholarship will continue to be a goal for the WRFC Youth Rugby Players to strive for.

The WRFC Casino Smoker will again mark the beginning of the Spring Season. Approximately 200 people turn out to support the club and kick off the season in style. We look forward to continuing this tradition every year.

Finally, we would just like to thank everyone, including our sponsors and fans for all of the support to make this season the best WRFC has seen since Ken Wood led the charge. And if you have any questions or comments on how you can do your part to make WRFC a better club for us all, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Best regards,

Kevin Tifft
WRFC President
